Dear Francois
I found you because of the tricotins that you've been making for my friend,Marian and now her husband and I have pulled out my late hubby's lathe and cleaned it up ready to use ... see what you've started!!
Have a nice Christmas!

Thanks Susan, I'm glad to see that the ball keeps rolling! Do you have a few pictures of the lathe?
Have a nice Christmas too!

PS: Don't forget to put some grease on the bearings if the lathe hasn't served for a while

Ah! What a surprise to see Susan here! I wanted to tell you that I love Clara's work in the picture she made for you. She has captured the story very well.
There is a picture of a Santa spool knitter on the blog - Chris (hubby) is becoming interested in woodturning and had a little practice/play at our dear friend, Susan's home in "country Victoria", using what wood that was available. I decided to paint it as an old-fashioned Santa!
Merry Christmas to you and Clara!

Actually it wasn't just what wood we had to hand, it was also what CHISELS, because all of the good ones seem to have gone "missing".
Which brings me to a question Francois... given how expensive really good chisels are, which ones do you think are the most important to buy first??

Hello Susan

I would recommend a roughing gouge (to rough the blanks out), a spindle gouge (for profiling), and a french (!) bedane. The bedane is not much used outside France, but it's a very versatile tool that can be used as both a skew chisel and a scraper. You should be able to do a lot of spindle work already with these three.

In addition to the tools I'll recommend a few books (the ones from Phil Irons are quite good if you're really new to woodturning, and the ones from Richard Raffan are excellent over all - both are english speaking authors), and ideally a few days course with a profesionnal turner - this helps a lot to get the best out of the tools
